Modals are those auxiliary (helping) verbs which, together with the main verbs which follow them, express the ‘mode’ or manner of the actions indicated by the verbs. They express modes such as ability, possibility, probability, permission, obligation, etc.

The following are modal auxiliaries:

shall, should,’will, would, can, could, may, might, must, ought to, used to, need, dare.

♦ Usage:

1. A modal does not change according to the number or person of the subject, e.g.
He can learn. They can learn. I can learn. We can learn. You can learn.

2. A modal is always used with a verb in its basic form. The modal takes the tense, the main verb remains in its dictionary form, e.g.
I can swim.
I could swim.
I may swim. I might swim.

3. Modals can be used alone in response to a question, e.g. Can you swim? I can.
Will you swim? I will.
Will you come? I may. I will.

4. Modals, when joined with ‘not’ to form a negative, can be contracted, e.g.
I cannot swim. I can’t swim.
I will not swim. I won’t swim, etc.

1. Asking for and giving permission
May: May is used for asking permission in a formal manner.
May I come in?
Yes, you may.
May I use this space?

Can: Can is used for asking permission in an informal way.
Can I go home early today?

Could: Could expresses polite request.
Could I travel with you?
Could you lend me your magazine?

2. Possibility: ability
can and could, may and might
Can is used to express ability or possibility.
He can perform complicated Yogic aasanas.

Could is the past equivalent of ‘can’ and expresses an ability in the past. It also expresses a weak possibility.

He could do these exercises ten years ago.
He could come to the party this evening.
Could is also used to make polite suggestions.

We could go on a picnic next Sunday.
May and Might also express possibility.
The Principal may be in a meeting.
Might suggests a weaker possibility.
He might be taking a round of the school.

3. Compulsion, Obligation, Necessity
‘Must’, ‘should’, ‘ought to’ express compulsion, obligation and necessity.
You must control your weight.
You should exercise regularly.
You ought to see a doctor for obesity.

4. Promise, Determination, Threat
Will and Shall suggest promise or give assurance.
Will is used with T and ‘we’.
Shall is used with ‘you’ and third person. In modem times, however, ‘will’ is used with all subjects. We will attend your wedding.
You shall have a comfortable journey.

‘May’ is used to express a wish.
May you live for a hundred years.
May all joys be showered on you.

6. Request
Can, could, will, would.
‘Could’ and ‘would’ are more formal and polite in expressing a request than ‘can’ and ‘will’.

Could you take our class tomorrow?

7. Need, used to, dare
You need to be more tidy.
Used to expresses a past action now discontinued.
I used to swim every morning when I was young.
Dare is used to show not to be afraid to do something. It is mostly used in negative sentences and in questions.
Dare you challenge the boss?
No, I dare not.

In the first sentence, the subject (the hunter) is the doer of the action. This sentence is in Active Voice. In the second sentence, the subject (tiger) is the receiver of the action. Here the subject is being acted upon. This sentence is in Passive Voice. The change in the form of the verb showing whether the subject acts or is acted upon is called the Voice. A verb is said to be in the Active Voice when the person or thing denoted by the subject acts or is active. So the verb ‘killed’ in the above sentence is in the Active Voice. A verb is said to be in the Passive Voice when the person or thing denoted by the subject does not act but suffers the action done by something or someone. The verb ‘was killed’ in the second sentence is in the Passive Voice. Some more examples are given.

A report is an official/semiofficial piece of writing which involves giving information about an occurrence, an event or an investigation. By its nature, a report has to be

Factual
Concise
Objective, and
Free from any bias

The writer of the report must state only the happenings and occurrences in sequential order. He/She does not have the freedom to express his/her opinions or conclusions. Similarly, elaborations, descriptions, and irrelevant matter cannot be included.

Report Writing Format Class 11

A newspaper report must be comprehensive but brief; factual yet interesting.

Hence factual reporting is an actual coverage of an event. It is a brief review of a situation or a process that includes only the relevant points and information. It is usually written in the third person and in indirect speech. The passive voice is used. The language used is neutral and figurative. Ornamental language is avoided. The content should include when, where, why and how of the topic to be written about.

A newspaper report has all the following qualities:

It has to have an appropriate language.
Since the events being reported are in the recent past, the past indefinite, past continuous, and past perfect tenses are used.
The language used is formal.
The passive voice is preferred.
‘Journalese’ or journalistic vocabulary is used:
(a) “according to sources”/according to a spokesman”;
(b) Words like ‘murderer’, ‘smuggler’, etc. are preceded by “suspected/alleged’.
There should be a logical development of ideas, i.e., causes/reasons, effects, or consequences.
It should be comprehensive and reflect the opinions of people. It should contain views of all the sides involved.
Personal pronouns are to be avoided.

The report for a school magazine follows the same format as a newspaper report but the language is semi-formal. The writer’s name and class are mentioned just below the heading/title of the report.

Points to remember (for news report)

A news report should have a headline, date, and place of origin of the news.
It should carry the byline/name of the reporter.
It should contain only relevant information.

Points to remember (for first-person accounts)

Describe the incident objectively.
The description must be logical and in sequence.

Be objective.
The presentation should be logical and systematic.

Points to remember (for a factual description of the process)

Give a step–by–step account of the activity, experiment, and procedure. It is essential to provide a heading and promoting the reporter’s name is essential.

Headline
Every news article has a headline to attract the attention of the reader. The headline must state the topic of the news in a strong, short phrase or statement.

A headline must be:

catchy
brief – leave out articles, prepositions, etc. where possible and use abbreviations/shortened word – forms.

Byline
Since this is your report, you need to let the reader know who wrote it. The line with your name on it is called the “byline” because it tells by whom the article is written. Write the word “by” followed by your first and last name. On the next line, write the name of your school and city.

Lead paragraph
A lead paragraph usually answers the questions: Who, What, Where, When, Why.
Remember to write about these in your lead paragraph:

name or names of the person or thing this news is about
the place where this incident happened
the day, date, and time of the day when it happened.
details of the incident
reasons why the incident happened

Paragraph 2
Eyewitness accounts add to the authenticity of the news. Also, they may interest the reader. Include some quotes from the eyewitnesses’ comments. Also, describe what they felt about the incident.

Paragraph 3
Describe the future course of action is planned.
Note: Remember to use simple, clear but formal language.
Include the following details in your report:

The competition was held on 12th August. The students were given three topics and had to prepare a poster on one of them. Paper was provided but the students had to bring their own painting material. Three judges were to pick the winners. The venue was the Artroom. Students were given one hour for the poster which had to have one picture in four colours and a text in 50 words.

The students produced excellent work. The judges picked up the three best entries. The Chief Guest gave away the prizes to the winners.

New Delhi, 27th Aug. All trains on Delhi-Baroda-Mumbai routes have been cancelled due to flash floods in Gujarat. Some trains have been diverted. Railway officials had no idea when the trains via Baroda will be resumed.

Flash floods hitting Gujarat region have covered the railway tracks with two feet of water at certain places. A span of 100 metres of railway track has been washed away, resulting in the cancellation of Rajdhani, Paschim Express and some other trains on this route.

New Delhi Station is crowded with stranded passengers. They have no choice but to wait for the resumption of train services. Food, water and toilet facilities at the station are inadequate.

Mr Bhagat, a business class passenger, said that he was amazed when a hijacker across the aisle suddenly pulled out a gun and informed the passengers that the plane had been hijacked. The details of the drama are slowly emerging. In the economy class, three hijackers took positions in the aisle with their machine guns aimed at the passengers.

Mrs Sheela Bhatnagar, another passenger heaved a sigh of relief when the passengers were rescued by the Black Cat commandos ending their ordeal.

The tragedy of the devastating floods in our region hit me hard when I visited the camps run by a local NGO. It provided help and relief to the flood victims. I visited the camp with the NSS team from our college.

Heavy rains led to a breach in a dam on Gandak river in eastern UP. As a result, several villages were inundated. Villagers lost their homes; standing crops were destroyed. I wish to put on the record today my first venture into the kitchen which turned out to be a huge success. I am to say that the school tennis champion and merit scholarship winner, yours truly, was a phenomenal success in the kitchen as well.

My mother had just come home after a knee replacement surgery and was confined to bed. I had to prepare a meal for the entire family. I decided on a single dish meal. I found the mother’s recipe book, search the fridge, and started on my maiden efforts.

The earth wears a cloak of dust. Half an hour on the road is enough to cause irritation in the throat and a feeling of being suffocated. The dust just hangs in the air. Upon closer look, we find there is less dust and more smoke, chemicals, and poison in the air around us.

Today, the water tastes funny. It smells strange too. If you store it in a bucket, soon there will be sediments at the bottom. There are frequent outbreaks of gastroenteritis which claim several lives. The story of the soil is no different. It is polluted by chemicals and undegradable plastic and glass. Garbage makes the face of our cities ugly.

The common factor in this dismal scenario is human neglect. We do not take enough care of our life-supporting systems. Immediately a concentrated drive should be launched to prevent the pollution of water, air, and soil. Strict discipline and awareness among the masses are essential prerequisites. Remedial measures are needed to restore the purity of the elements. New rules have to be made and old rules have to be implemented.

A road monster is often disguised as a city bus, a speeding truck or a drunken midnight reveller. Whatever the guise, he wreaks havoc on pedestrians, other motorists, bystanders or just people sleeping on pavements.

Indian Constitution grants special privileges to the backward classes in matters of education and work. The fathers of the Constitution expected that with these privileges, the backward castes will become a part of the mainstream. But this has not happened.

The matter of reservation has degraded into a political tool in the hands of unscrupulous power seekers. Backward castes are seen as potential vote banks, therefore all political parties offer them new benefits. This has two major repercussions. On the one hand, it is in the interest of the politicians to keep the backward castes away from the mainstream. Who would advise travelling to trouble-torn Kashmir for fun ? But, being an unconventional family, we decided to go to Srinagar last summer, and believe me, the experience was simply out of the world.

There is no exaggeration in the saying ‘If there is heaven on earth, it is here, it is here, it is here.’ Srinagar valley is a gem set in the mountains. The Dal Lake is no less than a sparkling jewel. On my first morning in Srinagar, I woke up to a glorious sky when the high peaks shimmered purple and gold in sunlight.

An outstanding feature of Kashmir is the Mughal Gardens which are a perfect example of aesthetic discipline coexisting with natural beauty and splendour. Be it Nishat or Chashme Shahi, the beauty is spell-binding.

Any reference to Kashmir is incomplete without the mention of the people and their handicrafts. The beauty of nature is reflected in its papier mache, embroidery and carpet industry.

Polythene is non- biodegradable, therefore, it cannot be thrown away and forgotten. Polythene bags form about 40% of a city’s garbage. They choke drains and cause flooding of colonies. From the garbage dumps, they find their way into the stomachs of cows and cause death by constriction of the intestines.

If attempts to recycle polythene are hazardous, the chemicals used in the process are extremely toxic and can cause cancer. Foodstuff carried or stored in recycled bags gets contaminated and harms human beings.

On 26th January 2009, four police officers of Mumbai and two NSG commandos were awarded Ashok Chakra posthumously. They Said down their lives fighting terrorists in Mumbai from 26th to 29th November 2008.

On 26th Nov., 2008, India’s financial capital, Mumbai was under siege. Terrorists came by the sea and occupied key locations in the city. City’s top hotels, the Taj, Oberoi and the Trident, were held to ransom. Nariman House, the Jewish Centre of the city, was another target where the terrorists held Jewish families hostage. In addition, the terrorists opened fire at V.T. Station killing several passengers.

Almost immediately, Mumbai police swang into action. With old fashioned weapons, policemen drove away the terrorists from V.T. Station, Cama Hospital, Girgaum and Chaupatty. In the process, many policemen lost their lives. But their valour foiled the evil designs of the terrorists to take hostages. Meanwhile NSG commandos were called and they entered the hotels and Nariman House. After grim fighting for almost four days, they were able to kill the terrorists and free the people trapped inside.

The security forces had to pay a heavy price. Mr Hemant Karkare, Anti-terror Squad Chief, Mr Ashok Kamte, Additional Police Commissioner, Mr Vijay Salaskar, Police Inspector and Mr Tukaram Omble, Assistant sub-inspector sacrificed their lives. Of the NSG commandos, Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan and Havildar Gajender Singh died in action. All three valiant men were honoured posthumously by the President, Mrs Pratibha Patil on 2,6th January with Ashok Chakra.

Sadly, love of cleanliness is not found in Indians. Even educated people do not maintain cleanliness in their surroundings. Most parks do not have properly maintained lawns or flower beds. The grass is patchy and dry in most parks. The benches are broken or missing. There are no garbage bins. So, people throw litter everywhere.

Most importantly, the entrance gates are broken allowing free access to stray cows. These animals sit and roam all over the parks and do not allow children to play.

I request the civic authorities to bring the parks up to certain decent standards. Gardeners and caretakers should be made responsible for discharging their duties. The local councillor should be made accountable for the proper maintenance of parks in our beautiful city.
