Question 1.
Read the passage given below carefully and answer the questions that follow:

Donated Organs and their Transportation :
Once an organ donor’s family gives its consent and the organs are matched to a recipient, medical professionals are faced with the onerous challenge of transporting organs while ensuring that the harvested organ reaches its destination in the shortest possible time. This is done in order to preserve the harvested organs and involves the police and especially the traffic police department.

5. The traditional method of transporting organs by road is referred to as a “green corridor”. This process entails police escorting an ambulance, so as to move around traffic – usually a specific traffic lane is chosen and all signals on the route stay green to ensure it to reach its destination in the shortest possible time.

10. A ‘green corridor’ is a route cleared and cordoned off by the traffic police to ensure the smooth and steady transportation of harvested organs, on most occasions, to those awaiting a life-saving transplant. Organs tend to have a very short preservation time, such as the heart which has to be harvested and transplanted within four hours or the lungs which can be preserved for only six hours once they are harvested.

15. The first green corridor in India was created by Chennai Traffic Police in September 2008 when they accomplished their task of enabling an ambulance to reach its destination within 11 minutes during peak hour traffic. That organ saved a nine-year-old girl whose life depended on the transplant.

CBSE Sample Papers for Class 12 English Term 2 Set 3 with Solutions

20. Similarly, such green corridors have been created by traffic police of various cities such as Pune, Mumbai, Delhi NCR, etc. Personnel are stationed at selected points to divert, control and clear the traffic giving way to the ambulance. Apart from this, a motorcade of police vehicles accompanies the ambulance ensuring that it does not face any problems. Delhi Traffic Police provided a green corridor from IGI Airport to Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences in Vasant Kunj for transportation of a liver. The distance of 14 kms was covered in 11 minutes.

25. Experts point out the lack of a robust system to transport organs to super-speciality hospitals in least possible time. National Organ & Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO), the country’s apex organ donation agency, is now framing a proposal to airlift cadaver organs and will send a report to the Union Health Ministry. “Cadaver organs have a short life and so transplant should be done within a few golden hours.” Director (NOTTO) expressed, “Therefore, we are preparing a proposal for airlifting organs at any given moment.”

30. Most states do not have enough well- trained experts to retrieve or perform transplant procedures. Also, there is an acute shortage of advanced healthcare faculties to carry out a transplant. So, it is referred to other big centres in metropolitan cities. Organs retrieved from Aurangabad, Indore, Surat, Pune are sent to Mumbai as these cities uo not have super-speciality healthcare centres, informed offcials.

35. “In India, about fifty thousand to one lakh patients are suffering from acute heart failure and need heart transplant at any point of time. In a private set-up, a heart transplant costs ₹15-20 lakh which is followed up by post-operative medication of about ₹30,000 per month lifelong.”

Based on your understanding of the passage, answer ANY EIGHT questions from the six given below. (1 x 8)

(C) The writer thinks that the medical professionals face ‘onerous challenge of transporting organs’. Why does he think it to be ‘onerous challenge’? (1)

(D) Why does the Director (NOTTO) expressed that the transplant should be done within the golden hours? (1)

(H) Why do the organ transplants are mostly referred to the metropolitan cities? (1)

(I) Analyse how can smaller cities perform the organ transplants with the help of government. (1)
Answer:
(A) As per the passage, in India, heart patients have to struggle hard as the cost of transplant in private hospitals is 15-20 lakh and around a monthly 30,000 expense lifelong on medicine thereafter which most of the people can’t afford.

(B) Harvested organs have very short preservation time like the heart that should be transplanted within four hours and lungs within six hours once harvested.

So, the time taken to deliver the organs to the destination must be the shortest possible.

(C) Transporting harvested organs is a oner-ous challenge for medical professionals because there is a lack of robust transport system for organs and the time once the organs are harvested, is very limited.

(D) The director means to say that the time that is available for the doctors to transplant the organ once it is harvested from the donor is limited. The surgery must be performed in that limited period of hours for it to work.

(E) Accomplished their task.

(F) The phrase refers to the organ that is taken out from the donor in order to be transplanted into a patient’s body.

(G) Peak hour traffic.

(H) Organ transplants are mostly referred to the metropolitan cities because of the lack of facilities and professionals to carry the transplant in small towns.

(I) The smaller cities can perform the organ transplants if the government opens super-specialty healthcare units and provide well-trained professionals for assistance.

However, in India resistance to globalisation has come from various quarters like Trade Unions of industrial work force and through social movements. There have been left-wing protest to economic liberalisation voiced through political parties as well as through forums like Indian Social Forum. While it is too early to assess how beneficial this has been for India, the final test is ensuring that the advantages of progress are shared so that everyone benefits.
Or
Issues because of which globalisation is criticised all over the world are as follows:

  • Globalisation has been criticised for benefiting those who are already large and in power at the risk and growing vulnerability of the countries’ indigenous population.
  • Some economists have described economic globalisation as re-colonisation of the world.
  • Many movements all over the world feel that safety nets are insufficient or unworkable and called for halt to forced economic globalisation.
  • Globalisation results in decline of state capacity that is the ability of the government to perform tasks gets reduced. Globalisation has impacted the way the state functions.
  • Globalisation will undermine traditional cultures; it is opposed to self-reliance and protectionism. Globalisation generates a ‘Brain-Drain’ or a massive transfer of talents from developing countries to developed countries, which affects underdeveloped countries.

Question 13.
Highlight the acts of dissent and resistance to the Emergency imposed in 1975. In your opinion, how did these acts affect the public opinion? (6)
Or
Why the Government of India has imposed the National Emergency in 1975?
Answer:
Some acts of resistance and dissent to the Emergency were:

1. Several political workers who were not arrested immediately after emergency went ‘underground’ and organised protests against the government.

2. Newspapers like the Indian Express and the Statesman protested against the press censorship by leaving blank spaces where news items were censored. Magazines like the Seminar and the Mainstream chose to close down rather than submit to censorship.

3. Many pamphlets and newsletters were published secretly to bypass censorship. Kannada writer Shivarama Karanth, awarded with Padma Bhushan and Hindi writer Famishwamath Renu awarded Padma Shri returned their awards in protest against the suspension of democracy.

These acts of resistance deeply affected the public opinion. Many middle and lower class people came to believe that emergency was focused on the non-democratic character of the rule. In the backdrop of arrest of thousands of persons and the censorship of the press, the public opinion was against the Congress.

Jayaprakash Narayan became the popular symbol of restoration of democracy. The formation of Janta Party also ensured that non-congress votes would not be divided. It was evident that the going was tough for the Congress.
Or
The massive frequent protest, agitation and disruption led by the opposition parties under the leadership of Jayaprakash Narayan and tussle between Indian Government and Judiciary prompted government to declare of Emergency on 25th June, 1975.

Under Article 352 of Indian Constitution upon the advice by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed declared a state of emergency.

CBSE Sample Papers for Class 12 Political Science Term 2 Set 5 with Solutions

Government justified the declaration of Emergency on the following reasons

  • There was a threat of internal disturbances which caused serious crisis which made declarations of Emergency necessary.
  • In democracy, opposition parties must allow the elected ruling party to govern according to its policies. Frequent agitation, protest and disruption detailed government and democracy as well.
  • Extra-Parliamentary polities targeting Government leads to instability and divert the focus of administration of law and order from development to maintenance.

(C) Derry gets inclined towards Mr. Lamb in spite of being an introvert in the chapter ‘On the Face of it’. Substantiate with reference to text, in about 120-150 words. (4)
Answer:
(A) In the poem, ‘A Thing of Beauty’, Keats shows his unhappiness with his fellow human beings by stating that there is a ‘dearth of noble man’ in today’s world as there are only a few human beings who are noble in characters. Most of the men today are very selfish and opportunists who do not think about the welfare of others.

Earlier, the earth has seen men who were giving, magnanimous and kind in nature. They rose above the petty differences by being caring and loving towards each other. Unlike them, today’s men are very self-centered and unkind to the human nature. They even destroy the beautiful bounties of nature for their own happiness.

(B) Human being is a social animal that requires to communication with others in order to learn, teach, grow and spread love. No human can live a serene life if he is isolated. Similarly, in the story ‘The Rattrap’, we see three incidences where the consequences are aresult of human’s loneliness.

First of all, the rattrap seller, who came up with a thought that this world is he rattrap itself in the form of riches. It lures human beings with the help of money, materials and joys as baits. People, who try to get this worldly happiness, get trapped and lost inside it forever. He had this negative relevation because he was lonely man who was left with his thoughts alone.

Next was the lonesome retired crofter who craved for a human company. It was because of the desire of having a friend that made the crofter trust a complete stranger. He showed his private earnings to the peddler and as a result, lost all his earnings to him.

In the end, we also find that the ironmaster and his daughter were lonely. They had nobody to spend their Christmas Eve with, so, they insisted that the peddler should spend Christmas Eve with them even after knowing that he was a thief.

(C) Derry is an introvert due to his disability. He doesn’t like to be around people because they consider him frightful and ugly. They avoid him as they are afraid of him. His parents seem to be worried about him and his future. But one thing that inclines Derry to Mr. Lamb is that both Derry and Mr. Lamb suffer from physical impairment. While Derry has one side of his face disfigured and burnt by acid, the Mr. Lamb has a leg of tin because his real leg got blown off during the war. Also, apart from the physical disabilities, Derry finds signs of loneliness and disappointment in Mr. Lamb’s life that is quite similar to his own but Mr. Lamb’s approach towards his life is very positive, different than Derry’s.

Mr. Lamb provides Derry with a new approach to things. He tells him to see, hear, feel and think about things around him. He should not hate others as hatred is worse than acid because it bums the inside of a person. He told Derry that he has all the God-given limbs. He must work towards making his life better. Mr. Lamb’s positivity and understanding of Derry as a person inclines Derry towards Mr. Lamb.

Switch: It is a multi-port bridge with a buffer and a design that can boost its efficiency and performance. It is a data link layer device. The switch can perform error checking before forwarding data which makes it very efficient as it does not forward packets that have errors and forward good packets selectively to correct port only. In other words, switch divides collision domain of hosts.

Gateway: It is a passage to connect two networks together that may work upon different networking models. It basically works as the messenger agents between systems that takes data from one system, interprets it and transmits it to the other system. It is also called protocol converter. It can operate at any network layer. It is more complex than the switch.

Question 1.
Read the passage given below.

I saw ‘Jaws’, the popular shark movie, the summer it came out, in 1975 and became paranoid about sharks. Though I kept swimming after Jaws, it was always with the vague fear that a shark’s teeth could tug on my leg at any moment. Never mind that there’d

5. been only two shark bites since 1900 on the Connecticut coast, where I lived.

So, when I got this assignment for the National Geographic magazine. I decided to accept and do what I’d never wanted to do: swim with the sharks. I had to go to a place in the Bahamas known as Tiger Beach and dive with tiger sharks, the species responsible for more

10. recorded attacks on humans than any shark except the great white. It was to be my first dive after getting certified – which meant it would be my first dive anywhere other than a swimming pool or a quarry – and without a diver’s cage. Most people who got wind of this plan thought I was either very brave or very stupid.

15. But I just wanted to puncture an illusion. The people who know sharks intimately tend to be the least afraid of them, and no one gets closer to sharks than divers. The divers who run operations at Tiger Beach speak lovingly of the tiger sharks the way people talk about their children or their pets. In their eyes, these sharks aren’t man-eaters any more than dogs are.

CBSE Sample Papers for Class 12 English Term 2 Set 1 with Solutions

20. The business of puncturing illusions is never just black and white. My fellow divers had hundreds of dives under their belt and on the two-hour boat ride to the site in the morning of our first dive, they kept saying things like, “Seriously, I really can’t believe this is your first dive.” All this was okay with me until I reached the bottom and immediately had to fend off

25. the first tiger shark, I had ever laid eyes on. However, when I watched the other divers feeding them fish and steering them gently, it became easy to see the sharks in a very benign light.

I think it would be unfair not to mention that though tiger sharks are apex predators, they act as a crucial balancing force

30. in ocean ecosystems, constraining the numbers of animals like sea turtles and limit their behaviour by preventing them from overgrazing the sea grass beds. Furthermore, tiger sharks love warm water, they eat almost anything, have a huge litter and are the hardiest shark species. If the planet and its oceans continue to warm, some species will be winners and others will be losers, and tiger sharks are likely to be winners.

Based on your understanding of the passage, answer ANY EIGHT questions from the nine given below. (1 x 8)

(A) Cite a point in evidence, from the text, to suggest that the writer’s post-Jaws fear was not justified. (1)

In data communication, the transmission medium is also known as channel. The capacity of a channel is the maximum amount of signals or traffic that a channel can carry. It is measured in terms of bandwidth and data transfer rate as described below
Bandwidth Bandwidth of a channel is the range of frequencies available for transmission of data through that channel. Higher the bandwidth, higher the data transfer rate. Normally, bandwidth is the difference of maximum and minimum frequency contained in the composite signals. Bandwidth is measured in Hertz (Hz).

  • 1 kHz =1000 Hz
  • 1 MHz =1000 kHz = 1000000 Hz

Data Transfer Rate: Data travels in the form of signals over a channel. One signal carries one or more bits over the channel. Data transfer rate is the number of bits transmitted between source and destination in one second. It is also known as bit rate. It is measured in terms of bits per second (bps). The higher units for data transfer rates are

  • 1 Kbps = 210 bps=1024 bps
  • 1 Mbps = 220 bps=1024 Kbps
  • 1 Gbps = 230 bps=1024 Mbps
  • 1 Tbps = 240 bps=1024 Gbps
