The verb can be classified in different methods.
There are four types of verbs.

  1. Transitive verbs: A transitive verb is the verb which takes an object.
  2. Intransitive verb: An intransitive verb is a verb which does not take an object.
  3. Auxiliary verb: A verb which helps another verb to form its tense, voice or mood is called an Auxiliary verb.
  4. Modal verbs: The following verbs are called Modal verbs:
    Shall, should, will, would, may, might, can, could, must, ought and dare are called modal verbs.

1. Transitive verbs:
Examples:
Mr. Hales takes the class today morning.
By this sentences, Mr. Hales takes the class.
Here…
The word “Mr. Hales” is the noun.
The word “the class” is the object.
The word “takes” is the verb.
Only when all the three words are there, the whole sentences becomes complete and meaningful.
In case the object word is not there, the sentence “Mr. Hales takes” conveys no meaning and the sentences does not become complete. In that case “what does Mr. Hales take?” is not clear.
So only when the verb “takes” gets an object, the meaning behind the verb “takes” becomes complete.
That means the verb “takes” needs an object to make itself complete.
Such a verb which needs an object is called transitive verb.
That means the action of the verb is transmitted to another noun or another thing.

They brought the suitcase two days back.
Here the verb “brought” (bring) needs an object to become meaningful.
What was brought?
The suitcase was brought by them.
So the verb “bring” (brought) is a transitive verb.
My father has written a book which may interest you.
We are crossing the river by a boat.
The child is reading English poems clearly,
An uncivilized man killed John Kennedy.
She created this structure for our proposed–house.
My teacher gave me a pen before I entered the exam–hall.
They sell their properties.

In all the seven sentences give above, the respective verbs “write”, “cross”, “read”, “kill”, “create”, “gave” and “sell” need their respective objects to make the sentences meaningful.
So, all these verbs are transitive verbs.
Few other “Transitive verbs” are: build, carry, begin, bear, eat, choose, eat, find, forget, feed, drink, deal, cling, give, grind, have, hold, make, ride, lend, know, learn, win, steal, weave, shut, spread etc.

2. Intransitive verbs: As stated above, an intransitive verb is the verb that does not take an object.
Examples:

  • He laughed loudly.
    In this sentence, the verb “laughed” does not need an object to complete the sentence.
    So the verb “laugh” is an intransitive verb.
  • I daily wake up at 5 am.
    Here the verb “wake” does not need an object for completing itself.
    So the verb “wake” is an intransitive verb.
  • The ball fell down.
    The verb “fell” (fall) is an intransitive verb.
  • They are sitting on their cars.
    The verb “sitting” (sit) is an intransitive verb.
  • The river is winding through the forest.
    Here the verb “winding” (wind) is an intransitive verb.

Few verbs go, fall, die, sleep etc are exclusively intransitive.
Few more “Intransitive verbs” are: swim, stand, sit, sink, smite, shine, run, rise, lie, leave, kneel, grow etc…

1. Many Transitive verbs can be used as Intransitive verbs as well.
Examples:

  • They fought their enemies. (Transitive verb).
    They fought fiercely. (Intransitive verb).
  • He spoke the truth. (Transitive verb).
    He spoke to me. (Intransitive verb).
  • The peon rings the bell. (Transitive verb).
    The bell rings continuously. (Intransitive verb).
  • He walks. (Transitive verb).
    The hostler walks the horse. (Intransitive verb).
  • Birds fly in the air. (Transitive verb).
    The observatory flies balloon to study weather. (Intransitive verb).
  • The bulb broke. (Transitive verb).
    The students broke the glass. (Intransitive verb).
    Another type of verb is called “Auxiliary verb”.

3. Auxiliary verb: A verb which helps another verb to form its tense, voice or mood is called an Auxiliary verb.
Have, be (am, are, was and were) and do are usually used as auxiliary verbs, they can be used as Main verbs as well.|

Shall, should, will, would, may, might, can, could, must, ought and dare are called modal verbs.

Shall: When “shall” is used in the second or third person, it has the force of a command, a promise, a thread, determination, certainity.

  • you shall not go out without my permission.
  • He shall get my help.

Will: When “will” is used in thie first person, it can express (in addition to the future tense) willingness, a promise, a threat, determination…

  • I will help you.
  • I will be there in your wedding.

May: “May” has the force of possibility and permission. In the past tense “might” is used.

  • He may come here.
  • You may go now.
  • I believed that he might be honest.

Can: “Can” has the force of ability and permission.

  • He can do this work easily.
  • She can go home.
  • Everyone can learn this subject.

Must: “Must” has the force of compulsion, necessity, determination, duty, certainity of belief, inevitability.

  • Everybody must attend this function.
  • I must go urgently.
  • I must have full freedom.

Ought: “Ought” indicated duty or moral obligation.

  • You ought to be careful.
  • As the secretary I ought to have attended that meeting this verb “ought” must be followed by “to”.

Need: “Need” has the force of necessity or obligation. When this verb “need” is used to mean obligation in the negative or interrogative form, ‘s’ is not added to need in the third person singular (present tense).

  • She need not come here.
  • It need not be white in the Shirt.

Story Writing Based on Visual Inputs On The Mongoose and the Brahmin’s Wife

A brahmin, his wife, and his baby boy lived in a small village. They had a pet mongoose that lived with them. One day, when the brahmin was out of chores, his wife left the baby in the cradle and went to fetch a pot of water. She asked the mongoose to take care of the baby while she is away. As the mongoose guarded the baby, it saw a snake crawling into the house. It soon attacked the snake and killed it.

As soon as the brahmin’s wife entered with the pot of water, the mongoose happily welcomed her with blood all over it mouth. The lady was terrified at the sight and assumed that the mongoose had killed the baby. Furious, the lady dropped the pot of water on the mongoose and beat it to death with a stick. Then she went inside and found the baby happily playing in the cradle. The lady realized what she had done and repented for acting without thought.

Moral: Do not act in haste without understanding the situation.

A deer, a turtle, a crow and a rat were friends. They lived happily in a jungle. One day, the deer was caught in a hunter’s trap and the friends made a plan to save him. The deer struggled as if it was in pain and then it lie motionless, with eyes wide open, as if it were dead.

Points to Remember:

  • A well-written Notice must inform the readers about the 5 Ws:
    • What is going to happen, (that is, the event)
    • Where it will take place
    • When it will take place (that is, the date and time)
    • Who can apply or is eligible for it
    • Whom to contact or apply to (that is, the issuing authority)
  • Only the most important points should be written.
  • One is free to add any relevant information not included in the question.
  • The sentences should be short and grammatically accurate. They should be in the passive voice as far as possible.
  • The Notice should be presented within a box.
  • The word limit for a Notice is 40-50 words (only the words in the body of the Notice are counted).

While using interjections, we must keep in mind some very simple rules. They are as follows:

  1. We just add an interjection as an extra factor of strength to a sentence, without making any grammatical changes. This is to ensure that the latter can stand grammatically correct on its own, even if the added interjection is removed.

Definition of types of adjectives:
Adjectives are words that modify nouns. Adjectives are one of the 8 parts of speech. They give some information about nouns, such as colour or how many. The types of ad jectives are: descriptive, possessive, demonstrative, interrogative, or indefinite. Below are some examples of types of adjectives, along with examples of their usage.

1. Descriptive Adjectives: The most common type of adjective is the descriptive adjective. These are simply words that help of describe nouns. They can be colours, sizes, or other describing words.

2. Possessive Adjectives: Possessive adjectives are like possessive pronouns, but act as adjectives. They are: my, your, its, our and their. Remember: It’s an adjective if it comes with the noun; it’s a pronoun if it replaces the noun.

This is worth saying again: Possessive adjectives never use an apostrophe. This is tricky because when we use what is normally a noun in the form of an adjective to indicate possession, we use an apostrophe. But when we use the possessive adjective in place of a noun (which is why we use the possessive pronouns) there is a tendency to want to use the apostrophe.

Don’t do it! Even though we might write “The dog’s bone, “we do not subsequently refer to “It’s bone.” “It’s” is a contraction meaning “It is”; “Its” is a possessive pronoun. A similar mistake is using “who’s” for “whose”. Sometimes people also throw an apostrophe into “hers” or “theirs” and write “hers” or “their’s”.

We also use possessive adjectives when we talk about an action that serves as the subject of a sentence. For example: Our selling the house was the result off the bad company.

This means the same as: The bad economy forced us to sell the house. However, this is often incorrectly written as “Us selling the house…”.

3. Demonstrative Adjectives: Demonstrative adjectives are identical to demonstrative pronouns, but are used for a different purpose. Remember it is the function of the word that defines what kind of word it is in terms of the parts of speech. The demonstrative adjectives are: this, that, those, and what. In the following sentences the demonstrative adjectives are in red and nouns they modify are in blue.

4. Interrogative Adjectives: another type of interrogative adjective. Interrogative adjectives include the words which and what.
Which company do you want to invest in?
What bank do you trust with your money?

5. Indefinite Adjectives: Final type of adjective is the indefinite adjective. Ok, let’s see. It’s an adjective that’s not definite. How about a word like “some” or “many”.
Some people wanted to buy stocks.
Many people wanted to buy bonds.
A few people wanted to buy gold.
It is called indefinite Because it’s not exactly clear how many or who.

1. Adjective of Quality or Descriptive ’ Adjective: It denote the kind or quality of a person or thing. Example:

  • He is an honest person.

Note: Honest describes the type of person ‘he’ is and hence is an adjective of quality.
Adjective of Quality answer the question: Of what kind?

2. Adjective of Quantity: It indicates how much of a thing is meant. Example:

  • Rita ate some rice.

Note: The word some indicates the quantity of rice the eaten by Rita. Adjective of Quantity answer the question: How much?

Adjectives of quality have three degrees of comparison — positive, comparative and superlative.
To describe only one person or thing we use the positive degree.
The Ganga is a long river.
Neha is short.
When we compare one person or thing with another, we use the comparative degree.
The Amazon is longer than the Ganga. Amita is shorter than Neha.
When comparing two or more things using a comparative adjective, we use the conjunction than in the sen tence.
While comparing more than two things, we use the superlative degree.

The Lion and the Camel

In a dense jungle, a lion lived with its three assistants — a jackal, a crow and a leopard. Due to their proximity to the King of the jungle, the assistants never had to look for food. One day, they were surprised to see a camel, which usually lived in the desert, wandering in the forest. On inquiry, they learnt that the camel lost its way. The lion gave it shelter and protected it.

One day, the mighty lion was injured in a battle with the elephants. Unable to hunt, the lion and the assistants were left hungry. The three assistants suggested that they should eat the camel, but the lion refused to kill it. The assistants hatched a plan to make the camel offer itself as food to its protector. The crow, the leopard and the jackal each offered itself as food to the lion, which it refused. Seeing this, the camel also did the same and was instantly killed by the lion.

Moral: It is unwise to trust cunning people who surround powerful or wealthy ones of their own benefit.

Deep in the forest, there were three friends, a deer, a tortoise and a woodpecker. They were always seen together. They spent most of their time chatting or playing by the lake side.

One day, a hunter came to the forest and laid the trap behind the bush near the lake. The deer happened to be returning from the lake. He stepped on that trap and was caught in it. He cried out with pain. The deer called his friends and cried. “I have been trapped. Please, come and help me!” Also, read The Two Friends.

Hearing his cries for help, the woodpecker and the tortoise rushed to help his dear friend. They were horrified to see the trap. Soon, they thought of a plan. The tortoise went and called the mouse that lived in a nearby hole. The mouse and the tortoise started cutting the trap.

In the meantime, the woodpecker flew to the hunter’s camp. The hunter was just coming out of his tent. He had heard the cries of the deer and was anxious to catch him. The woodpecker acted quickly and sat on his head. He pecked twice on his head. The woodpecker pecked him so badly that the hunter cried out in pain and went back to his camp to take test. The woodpecker’s purpose was solved. He flew back to the deer.

By then, the mouse and the tortoise had cut and opened the trap and the deer was free. They hugged each other and promised to help each other in their bad times. The three friends were united again and lived happily in the forest. You may also like to read. Four Friends story.
